Every day 100 million users log on to Twitter. This social media giant has approximately one billion user accounts. That is a huge audience that your business should be connecting with – whether you’re looking to network with other professionals or promote your business, educating yourself on the basics is the first step in making the most of Twitter.
Here are a few tips to get you started:
Photos: A quality profile picture is essential. A good, clear photo of yourself, something related to what you tweet about, or your business logo will help people recognize you. Adding pictures to tweets is also a great idea. Tweets with images are retweeted 27% more than those without.
Hashtags: Hashtags are very important when it comes to the Twitter world – you should include them in your tweets. If you see a trending hashtag that you would like to use in your next tweet make sure it relates to what you are about to post. In addition to trending hashtags, there are those commonly used by specific groups, such as #marketing and #socialmedia for marketers. Discovering and using commonly used hashtags will help you reach your target audience and gain 14% more retweets.
Interaction: Interacting and engaging within your community is the most important thing you can do on Twitter. Retweet relevant content from those you follow, thank people for retweets, and respond to comments. Creating an online community can help increase the visibility and effectiveness of your Twitter account.
Content: As with anything online, content is king! Your tweets need to be interesting and relevant to those you are hoping to connect with. A continuous stream of self-promotion can cause you to lose followers, but tweets that make people pause in the constantly moving newsfeed will help you connect with others.
As with any social media platform, Twitter is changing and growing every day, so it’s important to be a part of it. It may seem intimidating at first, but if you dedicate a little time to learning it, before long you’ll start to gather a following.
